About Us

This section is devoted to the authors, Alex Ford and James Rogers. Both James and I come from Portsmouth, and are both Keen Fishermen ourselves. I have Been fishing For about 11 years. In that time, I have Crewed Voluntarily on a charter boat for a year, and done my fair share of Small boat angling, so I will Be talking about the boat fishing, and shore fishing further afield. James has been fishing for about 6 years, and will talk about the lighter tackle fishing and bass fishing in Portsmouth itself. Most of what we will write, is from personal experience, so this site should in no way be regarded as law, but instead act as a guide. The Tactics which we will discuss have certainly turned up trumps in the past, Which catches of bass up to 5lb not uncommon from the shore in summer, along with plaice up to 5lb 12oz from the shore in the spring, and numerous flounder, whiting and codling through autumn and winter. From the boats, I myself have had cod to 23lb, tope to 28lb, smoothhound to 16lb, conger to 36lb, thornback rays to 12lb and bream to 3lb, along with numerous whiting, dogs and pout. I have also had a shock turbot of about 5lb in the Solent, so I will Give you the low down on boat marks and tactics. As Far as actual boat qualifications, I hold my VHF licence, First Aid/safety at sea, and National Powerboat level 2. James Has had numerous catches from the shore, including Flounder to 2¾lb, Bass to 6lb Pollock to 5lb, Codling to 3½lb and plaice to 4lb. I Have had less Fish in numbers than James but what I have had has tended to have been of a fair size, with sole to 3lb, Plaice to 4lb, bass to 5lb 12oz. Although James usually catches at least 1 sizeable fish on each sortie, I may go for weeks without catching much and then pull out a specimen fish. I would , of course, prefer to catch a lot run-of-the-mill fish, rather than 1 Big Fish, but a Specimen fish is always very Nice to catch. Both James and I do most of our fishing by bikes, and many a time have our parents moaned about us waking them up at 3 o'clock in the morning to go on a dawn sortie to somewhere or other. This means that we are restricted to fishing mainly Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport and Hayling.
